Honoring a Diversity Collegium founder, Dr. Price Cobbs

In June we lost one of the Diversity Collegium’s founder members, Dr. Price Cobbs.

At our June meeting, we had a special opportunity to remember Price for the incredible human being and professional that he was. The Collegium’s first morning together opened in a way Price would have enjoyed—filled with smiles and laughter and sharing stories of his life. As one member said, "Price would be uncomfortable with all this attention."

Price possessed a humble spirit, and yet a man of great wisdom and strength. Our beloved friend and colleague, Dr. Price Cobbs will be missed greatly. He lives on in all those who knew him and through those he touched, directly and indirectly. His life made this world a better place.

Listen to some words of wisdom from Price here. It is our hope that in some way we honored Price’s legacy—and that of all The Diversity Collegium’s founding members—through the "Come Think With Us Day" in Seattle.

Diversity Collegium’s holds "Come Think Together Day"

The Diversity Collegium held our first "Come Think Together Day" on June 28, 2018, as part of our regular bi-annual meeting, hosted by Amazon, in Seattle, Washington. See more about this event here.

What a tremendous day it was exploring bridging narratives with representatives of many organizations and communities in the Greater Puget Sound Area! We can say with confidence that we were living our vision and mission, "To tap into the power of diversity and inclusion to transform the spirits, hearts and minds of societies, organization and individuals to positively impact the quality of life for all human beings," and "to advance the field of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility."

The theme for the day was "Mitigating the Assault on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI): Bridging Conversations and Actions." Effenus Henderson, president and CEO of HenderWorks, Inc., and co-director of the local Institute for Sustainable Diversity & Inclusion, kicked off the event with thought-provoking ideas and concepts. We built on Dr. john powell’s (he prefers lower case) model for creating "Bridging Narratives." We also identified practical things we could do individually and collectively, within our communities and our organizations, to proactively build bridges of understanding while mitigating those things that divide us.

We connected, learned from each other, laughed and even shed a few tears. We experienced the power of coming together and the impact of practicing bridging conversations.

We owe a special thank you to Amazon for providing a beautiful space for thinking together. We also owe special thanks to Zillow for hosting the Diversity Collegium’s meeting at an equally breathtaking space. We also thank our volunteers and everyone who took their time to be a part of this profound experience.

Stay tuned for the next, Come Think Together Day!
